Complete And Partial Dentures

While we all wish for a healthy, confident and bright smile, often there is the need to replace the teeth with a replacement. The replacement is required for teeth due to damage caused by an injury, weakening of gums or due to a cavity. Many people of different ages consider dentures a good solution for missing teeth. If you have a missing tooth, wearing dentures is a solution so that you can enjoy a diet without a problem and smile with confidence.

What Are Dentures?

A denture is a removable appliance that is used to replace missing teeth and surrounding gum tissue. They can be easily taken out and put back into mouth. Dentures are made of materials like acrylic and metal. Dentures are available in two types- Complete and partial dentures. Complete dentures can be used to replace all the teeth while partial dentures are used when some teeth need to be replaced.

Complete Denture

Complete dentures are used for replacement when all of the teeth are missing in a single arch i.e. upper or lower arch. Complete dentures can be classified into two types- Conventional Dentures and Immediate Dentures. Conventional dentures are made after teeth have been removed and tissues have healed. The process may take about 12 weeks after removal of teeth or months.
Immediate dentures, on the other hand, are made in advance and are placed as soon as the teeth are removed. In this case, the patient does not have to wait for weeks without teeth. The disadvantage of immediate dentures is that they require more adjustments to fit as compared to conventional dentures. The immediate denture is a temporary solution until conventional dentures can be made and positioned

Partial Denture

A partial denture is used when one or more teeth remain in the mouth. This type of denture usually consists of replacement teeth that are attached to a plastic base. A partial denture consists of a metal framework that is attached to your natural teeth. Crowns are placed on the natural teeth to serve as an anchor for the partial denture. In addition to filling the space created by the missing teeth, partial denture prevents the natural teeth from changing position. In some cases, a precision partial denture is used in place of clasps to give it a more natural looking appearance.
Partial dentures have been in use for many decades, but with an emergence of newer technologies, quality materials and better designs partials are comfortable than ever. Partials are made of different types of materials, the most common of them are:

Acrylic Dentures

Acrylic dentures can be made in a short span of time and is also very cost effective than other dentures. These dentures can be used as a temporary solution before dental implant is placed or whether waiting for chrome dentures. In addition to this, the acrylic denture can be relined easily. One disadvantage of acrylic denture is that they can break very easily as denture base is slightly weaker due to its irregular shape. However, to overcome the weakness of the acrylic dentures, the base is usually built thick, which can take a little time to get used to.

Chrome Dentures

Chrome dentures, on the other hand, are reliable, strong and a long time material for partial dentures. Unlike acrylic dentures, chrome dentures rest on soft tissue and natural teeth, thus making it both tissue and bone born. Also, chrome dentures help in protecting the underlying bone during mastication because it evenly distributes the load.

Chrome dentures are strong and more efficiently designed which makes it more comfortable to wear besides having least breakage chances.
